Description:
Original WWII British 20mm Hispano aircraft cannon cartridge case, manufactured in 1942 and later retained and hand-engraved with the initials “R M” surrounded by flowing decorative scrollwork.
The 20mm Hispano cannon was one of the principal aircraft weapons used by British forces during the Second World War and was fitted to numerous RAF aircraft, including variants of the Spitfire, Hurricane, Mosquito and Beaufighter.
Rather than being discarded after use, this example was kept and decorated by hand, transforming an ordinary wartime cartridge case into a distinctive piece of military trench art and personal history.
The meaning of the initials “R M” is unknown. They may simply represent the name or initials of the serviceman who owned or engraved the piece, adding an intriguing personal element without any surviving provenance to identify its original owner.
A striking and highly displayable piece of original WWII aviation-related militaria, combining an authentic 1942-dated Hispano cannon case with individual hand-worked decoration.
Original wartime item – not a reproduction.
